If you are an affiliate marketer or thinking about becoming one, then you need to find a product to promote. What are the criteria for picking a great product? Whether you pick a product based on familiarity (because you use it yourself) or because of it’s popularity with others, make sure that there is truly a solid market for this product. It can be an electronic product associated with online sellers like Clickbank or Commission Junction, or it can be any physical product that can be sold even in a brick and mortar store.

All you really need to know is – does a market exist for this product? The way to find that out is to do some research. Check around to see if there is any interest in the product, are others promoting the product in magazine ads or newspapers. How about in stores, do you see the product being pushed in local stores anywhere? That can mean a good market exists for the product. Also do a search on several search engines including Google and Bing – do you see others putting PPC ads online to promote this product? If anyone is spending money online to promote it, then it must be for a good reason. It’s selling!

How about online stores like Amazon? You know they sell a lot more than just books and CD’s these days. Products like computers and PC components, home and garden items, jewelry, sports equipment, garden tools, all these things are being sold on Amazon these days. If you find a product you think might be popular, chances are it’s already for sale on Amazon. Also if you find books written about the topic you want to promote, check to see if there are books that are highly ranked on the topic. This means a healthy interest in the topic at the very least, if the rank is higher than 100,000 or so.

Don’t be afraid to do research on the blogs and forums, these tend to have a lot of hot topics and products written by people. One of my favorites is a site called Big-Boards (dotcom) which has hundreds of different forums on almost any topic you can imagine. They include everything from teen video games, to internet topics, cars, travel, adult themes, you name it and it’s probably here. So if you want to know if a hot topic is being discussed, do a search on the topic in the forums. Or to check on blogs you can go to Google and search site: blogspot.com “topic” and find any number of blogs pertaining to that topic. There are many other sites that you may also look into including eHow which is made up of many writers that have articles about many hundreds of topics. Like I say, do some research you will be amazed at what you can find on most any subject, and find some cool products to promote. (Doug Hart)
